The English pairing of Steve Abbott and Jamie Biggs secured the 2005 F1 Aircom Australian Sidecar Championship at a sun soaked Phillip Island on November 12/13. The 2002 Sidecar World Champions returned to Phillip Island after first heading down under for the 1999 World Championship.

They returned in 2001, again in chase of the World Championship but torrential rain on race day saw the meeting abandoned. In 2005 Abbott and Biggs rode their Team Aircom Castrol LCR Suzuki to 12 wins from 12 starts in an unblemished season. They topped the score sheet with 304 points. Mick Alton and Mark Patterson proved the best of the Aussies on 258 points with Steven Hutchinson and Darren Dewhurst third on 251 points.

Braking lap records at every Australian round they raced at this year, Abbott and Biggs also managed to slash the lap record at the Phillip Island by 3.884 seconds, set way back in 1991 by Andre Bosman and Dave Kellet .

Adam Treasure and Lionel Cornwall also went under the previous lap record with a 1.42.389, the first time in 14 years for an Australian team.

Steve Abbott said to Brett Gilbert after setting the new lap record as he took his helmet off after race “That was alright wasn’t it driver?”  While all Jamie could say was “If that was alright driver – you come and get on the back and see how alright it is from where I sit.” The pair loved the fast flowing circuit and both believe it was definitely a world class venue.
