By Brett Gilbert Two Australian Sidecar Teams competed in the 2007 FIM World Sidecar Road Race Championships conducted over 7 rounds throughout 6 different countries. The Aircom Systems Sidecar team consisting of Adam Treasure / Lionel Cornwell and Stacey Sellar / Darren Abrahams performed exceptionally well on the world stage. They finished 10th overall in the teams event, while Adam and Lionel finished a credible 14th in the individual standings. Unfortunately Stacey and Darren had to withdraw due to injury to Darren after only 2 rounds. Substitute team from the UK Andy Laidlow and Stuart Grahame were enlisted for the remaining 5 rounds. The World Sidecar Championships are run on the same program with a number of other major events on the European motorsport calendar. The highlights of the championships were competing on the same program as the German DTM touring Cars at Brands Hatch, the French Truck Racing at Le Man and to top it off meeting up with Casey Stoner at the Assen and Sachsenring MOTO GP events. In excess of 200,000 spectators turned up to watch the Sachsenring GP. Competing for the first time in Europe the teams had to come to grips with GP racing. In Australia the sidecar races are usually run over a 30km distance, however in the World Sidecar Championships the race distance is 90km – average laps per race being 25 laps. Both teams trained hard to meet the demanding physical and mental strengths required to compete at this level and are very pleased with their top 10 placing. The experience of meeting and competing with the worlds best in their chosen sport was a dream come true for all team members. Hopefully their fund raising activities in the off season will raise the funds required to return in 2008.
