A record crowd in excess of 15,000 fanatical motorsport fans are expected to turn up on Boxing Day to watch the famous Wanganui Street Race.

Every year on the 26th December the streets of Wanganui New Zealand are transformed into a mini “Isle of Man” road racing street circuit.

With hay bale lined streets and spectators 5 rows deep, the roar of thundering solos and sidecars provide the motor enthusiast’s with a true taste of street racing.

This year Wanganui is celebrating its 30th year of street racing and the 180 entrants list is laced with international competitors from England, America Germany and Australia.

The tight and twisty 1.4km track will test the international and local teams as they wind their way through the streets of Wanganui and in particular around the Wanganui Cemetry - thus giving the circuit its name - “the Cemetry Circuit”.

Australian racing teams, both solo and sidecar have been crossing the Tasman to compete at the Wanganui Street Circuit since the early 80’s. Superbike riders Scott Charlton and Chris Seaton, Sidecar teams of Doug Chivas and Stacey Sellar and more recently Motard entrant Josh McFarlane have all supported this thrilling yet dangerous event.

Returning from a successful season in Europe where he competed in the 2007 World Sidecar Championships, Australia’s Stacey Sellar will team up with NZ passenger Leighton Minnell. Minnell purchased last years winning LCR GSX-R 1000cc sidecar ridden by Sellar and has enlisted the sidecar ace as his pilot in an attempt to win the 2007 Wanganui Street crown.

Stacey is no new comer to the cemetery circuit winning in 2002, 2005 and 2006.

“I love racing at Wanganui. The track is so tight and demanding”.

“We don’t have anything like it in Australia and that is why we continue to come back to Wanganui each year. The spectators are crazy and so close to the action – it’s like spectators at a rally event”.
