Steve Abbott Jamie Biggs International F1 Sidecar Racing Team Steve Abbott and Jamie Biggs turned in another first class performance in the 3rd round of the Aircom Systems Australian F1 Sidecar Championships held at the tight and demanding Mallala Raceway. The likeable English pairing recorded three wins from three rides and smashed the lap record held since 1991 by Andre Bosman. The new lap record time of 1m 11.505 secs looks likely to remain for some time.
With Abbott and Biggs dominating out in front, there was action a plenty in the pursuing freight train of sidecars. Steve Hutchinson / Darren Dewhurst, Steve Jones / Jay Budarick, Mick Alton / Mark Patterson, Adam Treasure / Lionel Cornwell, Warren Bruce / Nate Leak and Doug Chivas / Matt Johnson were all fiercely competitive and constantly swapping paint. All three races had their moments, however the last race of the day was my highlight and will have the local boys talking for years to come. Treasure / Cornwell grabbed the holeshot closely followed by Hutchinson / Dewhurst, Jones / Budarick with Abbott / Biggs bogging down on the line. he tight first corner saw four teams side by side with the former world champions copping a “move out of the way” from up and coming youngsters Jones / Budarick and a “don’t argue” from Treasure / Cornwell relegating the Poms to 4th position. It took Abbott / Biggs another three laps to real in Treasure / Cornwell and Hutchinson / Dewhurst, however once they hit the lead the cream rose to the top and they charged on to record another lap record on their final lap. A bemused Steve Abbott commented after the race “Those local boys were all fired up weren’t they.” Abbott and Biggs will go into the final two rounds with a comfortable lead, however the battle for the minors will go right to wire. Next outing for the sidecar boys will be September 16 – 18 at Willowbank Raceway QLD. F1 Sidecar Pointscore after 3 rounds: Photo Courtesy Keith Muir
