Steve Abbott Jamie Biggs
International F1 Sidecar Racing Team
Steve Abbott and Jamie Biggs deserved a well earned rest after their
convincing win at Eastern Creek Raceway in round 1 of the Aircom
Systems Australian Sidecar Championships, so they took in a few of
Sydney’s sites before heading off to Perth on 27 – 29 May for Round two
at Barbagallo Raceway.
Steve Jamie and Brian, stayed at the Ridges Cronulla, 20kms south of
Sydney. As we woke we were bathed in a lather of sunshine and the
comment of the morning coming from Steve – “This Cronulla’s alright
here isn’t it driver”.
“It was great just to relax after a hectic week. All this traveling and
such.” Abbott explained. The boys enjoyed the walk along the beach,
however I didn’t see the bathers on. 30 degrees celcius– possibly too
cold.

After a day in the sun it was off to the Blue Mountains where they were amazed at the Three Sisters. “Why is it called the Blue Mountains - Just three silly rocks really” a bemused Jamie Biggs commented.

We sampled a few ales from the local pubs in Katoomba and woke up with a massive headache, just what we needed for the 2hr drive ahead of us.
Our trip passed through old mining towns such as Lithgow and Oberon, where we called into Oberon to catch up with Jim Newson – a toolmaker that has assisted many a sidecar team over his years and a proud fan of Steve and Jamie. Following a more traditional morning tea of tea and cake thankfully served up by Margaret Newson, we headed off to our final destination - Bathurst.
Bathurst turned out to be the highlight of our trip. We went to the Bathurst museum where all past and present greats are represented. There are heaps of old pictures and videos and of course plenty of actual cars, bikes and sidecars raced in the era.
A sign of things to come for Jamie Biggs??
They used to race these things - Bloody Hell!
After a good two hours in the museum, it was off to the track for a “speed limit” view of Mt Panorama. Both Steve and Jamie were impressed at the steepness of the climb up Mountain Straight. The Mt Panorama Circuit is a 6.6km “road” that is a normal road for 358 days per year and transforms into a race track twice a year for the annual car endurance races. The most famous being the Bathurst 1000. Bikes and Sidecars finished competing at Bathurst in 2001.

It was a great relaxing day out, but what better way to finish it off – a beer at the local pub.
