There are numerous categories of racing for sidecars. These are generally broken down into two major disciplines - Historic and Modern. Historic RacingHistoric sidecars are machines built, using engines and major components, prior to 1980. Some engine types used are Norton, Harley Davidson and Triumph, as well as some of the modern marques of Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki etc. Due to the nostalgia associated with historic racing, these classes are becoming increasingly popular. HistoricRacing is broken up into 5 periods, depending on the age of the motorcycle.
Each class has its own requirements regarding eligibility, and requirements. Modern RacingModern racing covers all bikes manufactured after 1st January 1981, with some exceptions. Modern Racing is broken into two categories Formula 1Forumla 1 bikes are known as "long bikes". They generally have a longer wheelbase than the Formula 2 sidecars. Engines are limited to 4-cylinder, 4 stroke engines up to 1200cc. Formula 2Formula 2 bikes are known as "short bikes". Engines are limited to 2-cylinder up to 1000cc or 4-cylinder up to 600cc.
